What is Autocross?
If you are interested in finding out what an autocross is like,
the IRAC series offers a novice class where we focus on teaching
the basics of autocrossing. We describe in detail what comprises
an autocross, and you get the opportunity of driving a course
with an experienced autocrosser explaining good techniques should
you have any problems. Many IRAC regions also sponsor autocross
driving schools, where the techniques of autocrossing can be practiced
in a non-competitive atmosphere. Watch the Rundschau for details
or check the Calendar of Events.
Other sports car clubs in Pittsburgh hold autocrosses frequently (although nothing matches the feeling of a lot filled with just German sports cars with a three number designation). For info on these events, you can call the Steel Cities Hotline at (412) 221-6692 for times and schedules.
One final note on equipment. Porsche club events require a 1995
or newer SNELL rated racing helmet. There are two types of ratings
"M" and "SA". You should look for the SA rating. These are not
local discount department store shelf items, but can be obtained
at a race specialty store (check the phone book or "Panorama"
advertisers). You can arrange to borrow one at your first event
before you decide to buy.
Hope to see you at an event soon. If you want further info, please contact the IRAC Committee Chairman.
